Today, we are getting into a serious topic: body image anxiety. There are different terms for this disorder, such as body dysmorphia or body dysmorphic disorder (which are the more common terms), but honestly I prefer the term ‘body image anxiety’ because it’s easier to decipher what it means right of the bat, which is something you can’t really do with ‘body dysmorphia’.
I wanted to bring this up because school has started and it’s been brought to my attention that some of you guys are already being made fun of or being bullied in school by other students or even your teachers (by the way, report that teacher if they’re making you uncomfortable; they have no right to be disrespectful). And at first, especially coming right off the summer, it may not affect you as much but as time goes on, it can really add up leading to this anxiety.
Quick disclaimer: I am not a professional nor am I claiming to be one. I’m just stating information that I found on the Internet and some tips on how I cope with it.
So what is body image anxiety? Body image anxiety, according to a bunch of sources that I meshed together, is a condition where you can’t stop thinking about one or more perceived flaws in your appearance and you feel so embarrassed and ashamed and even anxious about it that it not only negatively affects your outlook on yourself, but also negatively affects other areas of your life, such as your social life.
So from my experience as a tall girl, it was my arms. I would compare the length of my arms to that of my peers. And I was much taller than them and had much longer limbs, so it looked abnormally long (almost like Slenderman lol). I was also extremely awkward as a kid and it took a while to actually grow into my body so everything just looked super disproportionate to me. I grew to really hate how long my arms looked. Tall girls are not necessarily just limited to disliking their long arms. It could be legs, feet, overall height, etc.
