Why Is Tall Clothing So Expensive? | And Where To Find Tall Women's Clothing

Finding quality clothing as a tall woman has always been a struggle.

Yes, there are a lot more options than there were about 10, 15, 20 years ago.

Big retailers are finally offering “tall sizes”, which was great to see, only to find out that tall to them isn’t the same as tall to us. Apparently, catering to the 5’7”, 5’8” girlies is enough, and the girlies taller than that just don’t exist. Additionally, proportions are weird; the hip and waist areas don’t fit well, and we have the TikTok Shop ‘tall girl friendly’ scams.

So there are all these options, and yet it still feels like there’s quite literally no options for us. But that’s not entirely true. There are options for us that are good quality and long enough.

You just have to open up your wallet and spend hundreds of dollars ://////

In today’s episode, we’re going to discuss where the tall girlies can find clothing for their long limbs and why tall clothing seems so expensive. Tune in for more!

Finding quality clothing as a tall woman has always been a struggle. However, yes, I will acknowledge that there are a lot more options than let's say, ten, fifteen, twenty years ago. Big retailers are finally offering tall sizes, which is great to see, only to find out that tall to them is not the same as tall to us. Apparently, catering to the five seven, five eight gurlies is enough and the girlies taller than that just don't exist. Additionally, proportions are weird, the hip and waste areas don't fit well. We have the TikTok Shop tall Girl friendly scams. So yes, while there are options out there, it still feels like there's literally no options for us. However, again, there are options out there that are a little bit harder to find, but they're good quality and they run very, very long. You just got to open up that wallet. It's been hundreds and hundreds of dollars on them. In today's episode, we're going to discuss where the tall girlies can find true tall clothing that fits their long limbs, and why tall clothing seems so expensive with out further ado, let's get into it. Good morning, everybody, You are currently listening to a Tall Girls podcast hosted by a tall girl named India. I hope everyone who's tuning in today is doing super fantastic. Before I get into this episode, I do want to say make sure you're following me on my socials at a Tall Girls podcast and Instagram, TikTok, and picture so that you can stay up to date on all of the latest podcast episodes and catch a glimpse of my everyday life. Also, feel free to leave your review and let me know how tall you are. I'm genuinely curious. I also have a monthly newsletter, make sure you subscribe to that. Everything is going to be linked in the description. I hope all of you guys are doing super fantastic. The first part of this episode is actually inspired by a request from one of you guys under one of my previous episodes. I think it was the transphobia episode. I did not expect that video on YouTube to do wonders. I'm not gonna lie to y'all. I think it's like over ten ky views now, and I'm like, I literally never thought that day would come. So thank you guys for that, and also thank you for some of the recommendations that you commented under that video. Again, if you have anything that you want me to talk about on this podcast, make sure you let me know comment dms. I really need to go through my dms. I've seen a couple coming in from you guys. I apologize in advance. It's just like my birthday week and a half, I have not been on my phone as much as I usually. Honestly, I'm in school, so I'm not even on my phone like that period because I'm focusing a lot on that. But summer is coming around, the semester is going to be winding down soon, even though finals is coming up. My birthday week and a half is over, so I'm going to get to those. But I'm just saying this to say, you can hit me up in my DMS. I will check them eventually. You can let me know in the comments. You can even email me atg Podcasts Upan at gmail dot com any recommendations you may have, and yeah, I'll try to get to those. But anyways, there was a request under one of my episodes asking for brands that are good for the Talk Girl. And I'm assuming that these brands are like clothing brands. Maybe even shoe brands. So first, let's just address the issue here. The doll Girls shopping experience is very exhausting and frustrating. Nothing fits in store, Online shopping is pretty hit or miss. We often get comments like just size up or shop in the men's section, which yes, solve some of our problems, but not all of them. We honestly deserve so much better. Let's listen to a few experiences. I'm just Sinzara, and I'm just so pissed because I just hate that pet like brands don't think about toll girls, nor that brands don't think about to girls, Like I cannot pick up a pair of pants and say I'm gonna wear this or I'm gonna buy it. But like as a tall girl, it. Don't hate the floor, Like it's really boring. Like me and my stup were just talking, like are like in terms of pants, Like I barely have pants because if I want pants, I have to order, So yeah, I'm not happy, Like I'm actually like really pissed because I'm like this is how it's been our whole life, and I'm like it's not here, Like I can't just go in a store and buy pants, like it's really nothing. I love being too, But something that really annoys me is shopping for clothes. Why is every piece of clothing made for a five to gel I'm shopping online. Oh my god, this track see is so nice. I order it, I wear it. My angle's are exposed, my leg hair is just flying in the wind. It's just jumping. Why why? But let's have a word. Then there's tool World companies. I'm like, cool three times the price is one will close? How is that fair? Like Jeff Bezos, because I'm tool I should suddenly have more money. Then it's like, okay, she has like two tool sections. I ordered joggers basically from the toll section. To tell me why they're still jumping? I got scammed. This shouldn't be the case. It's not fair. I want to wear cue clothes as well. I can't buy tracksuits because I know it's going to jump. Let's sort this out. Please find jeans as a tall person has to be one of the most frustrating things in the world. So I've lost a bit of weight recently, and none of my genes fit me. I kind of bought oversized in the past anyway, So they're all just way too big, so I essentially need a whole new gene wardrobe. And I have been around three or four shops today. Not a single pair has fit me. And it's so frustrating because I feel like I've got something so specific in my head what i want, and he needs to try jeans on and I really can't be bothered ordering twenty pairs online just for AESOS to block me from returning them. I mean, shopping for jeans in the right size in general is hard, but as a tall person it's just so much more difficult now. Over the past few years, I've done a few episodes discussing various issues within the fashion industry and tall fashion overall. Of course, we have the most standard one where there are brands that don't offer tall sizes at all. Don't offer let's say, if their shoe brand don't offer extended shoe sizes at all, They basically cater to the average height woman with pants and scenes that are up to like thirty two inches or long sleeves that you know aren't really long enough for us for us tall girlies shoes not really going past the size nine or ten. We also have the long versus tall issue. I don't know if I actually ever did a full episode on that. Maybe I could, we'll see. We also have the long versus tall issue, where long you basically just slap on a couple inches, maybe an extra inch or two to a pair of pants, without considering other proportions, whereas tall considers the length and our proportions and the rise and the hip area, so forth and so on. While we're on the topic of proportion, sometimes these brands can exaggerate the proportions where they have these awkwardly long drop crotches or these weird armpit gaps. We also have tall washing, where brands put tall models five nine, five to five to eleven, maybe even six feet in their clothing, and these models are and runways. These models aren't ad campaign So you know, you see these taller women wearing their clothes and you think, oh, like, these clothes are for taller women, when really they don't sell any of the tall sizes. Clothing that they sell basically fits the average type woman. I personally fell victim to tall washing. This was I think last semester because I was looking for a dress for a some it was like a party or whatever for school, and had a particular theme. So I had to buy a dress. And there was this particular dress that I like at the time on the LULUs website. Yes, we're calling out these brands on the LULUs website. It was a mini dress, and you know, tall girls mini dresses, that's already difficult. However, I am a little over five ten. I like to run up to five ten and a half. So the model she was five ten I believe, or five eleven, and the dress looked like it covered her. But you know, so I was like, Okay, she's five ten, five eleven, Like, I think that this will be fine for me. I was mistaken. I was horribly mistaken. It did not cover what it needed to cover and it had to be returned. So watch out for that tall girlies. And then also we have the tall brands that offer tall options for us. Yes, but those options are very bland, very basic, very boring and drab. Not to say that we don't need our basics, because we do, but they also don't really offer that many cue or trendier options. And it's a lot. It really is a lot. However, over the years of doing this podcast and so forth and so on, and just being a tall girly. Okay, I will say yes, being a tall girly you definitely find options over time. But I think that having this podcast also sped up the process because I have gotten a lot of advice from other tall women following tall fashion influencers, even interviewing these brands, tall brands, small tall brands on this podcast. So I want to share what works for me and for reference, I am again a little over five to ten. I like to run up to five ten and a half because why not. I have a thirty six inch in seam and in terms of my proportions, I have very long legs but a short Torso here's what worked for me. Starting with the bigger retailers, Gap has tall sizes, Old Navy has tall sizes, American Eagle has long sizes in their pants. Gap and Old Navy, yes they definitely sell tall pants, but I think there's other things like dresses, maybe jackets, if I'm not mistaken, are sold in tall whereas American Eagle is just long pants or long jeans. Czara is also a place where I've gotten some things if you search up full length though, so full length pants, full length jeans, and these are all online. I have had some success in store, but that's more so with tops because and not even long sleeve tops, like the long sleeves that I'm wearing right now is not hitting, but the actual long sleeves I have, I already wore all of them, so they're in the wash. But short sleeves and tank tops have worked out for me, mainly because I do have a short, pretty short tore. So I have been recently trying to get back into dresses. I have always had a love hate relationship with dresses because as literally the example that I shared earlier, they just it's just hard to find a long enough dress. And then like midi dresses are also a little bit like strange because they hit weirdly, and then Maxie dresses aren't really Maxie dresses because their midi dresses. The whole dress situation. I just stopped China War dresses for years because it was just annoying. So now I'm trying to get back into them, and shockingly, I've actually had success with the store called Mango, specifically with the shorter dresses. They've been going past my butt. So if you want to find any like if that's your style, I would say, and you want to find like dresses, like shorter dresses, I actually like go past your butt cheeks. I would actually recommend that store if you're my height. I will say, Now for the smaller brands, I do have a playlist over on my YouTube where I'm gonna try I'm gonna try to link that in the description so that audio and video listeners can check that out. But I do have a playlist of a bunch of tall small, tall brands I've interviewed on this podcast, so you could literally just go through that and find all the names of everybody I've interviewed. I will recommend one place for sure, Tall Size, because Tall Size has a bunch of like small tall brands under one roof basically on their website. They have Prissy Duck, they have elevated closet, they have a Pray June, they have a whole bunch. So it's like you could just go on that site and you can find a whole bunch of brands on there as well. I also have a discount code I Lot ten for ten percent off your first purchase at Tall Size, because things can get a little pricey on there, and we'll get into that later in this episode. But yes, if you want to support the podcast and so forth, then you want to shot tall. You want to support small tall brands, check out Tall Size and use my discount code I Lot ten for ten percent off your first purchase at Tall Size. I've had some success with American Tall. That's where I got my long sleeve tops from actually that I typically wear. I only have three from there. I need to get a fourth. I wanted to first test out three. I got it in black, some type of like deep magenta color and green. I really wanted the cocoa brown at that time, but they didn't have it. It was sold out and I was back in stock, so I should definitely get that. I've had some success with American Tall for their long sleeve tops. I've tried long Tall sally once. Not for me, to be honest, I think part of the reason is because I got a jumpsuit and you know, getting a one piece and you're a short tall girally, but then on top of that you have a short torso with long legs, Like, the proportions were just very much off on that, so I had to return it. But there are like six feet and up tall women who have found a lot of success on that website. Also, in terms of extended shoe sizes, I would recommend Tray Soles. I haven't gotten any shoes from there. Personally, I don't really shop for shoes honestly, which I should probably get into. But when I met the owner, the founder, Judy, at a fashion show, a Tall Girl fashion show with rach with Rachel who's also the founder of rach Will, I also recommend rach Will. But those are like extremely higher end pieces, but they're stunning. But I met Judy, the founder of Trey Soles, I tried on one of her shoes. They didn't fit me quite right. However, the quality is really good and they were really comfortable, so I will definitely recommend her for extended shoe sizes. But Tall Size also has like extended sized shoe brands on their site as well, so definitely take a look at that if you're a tall clothing brand or an extended sized shoe brand. Hearing this right now yourself in the comments, there are so many tall women out there who don't know about the options available to them and are still struggling to find clothes that work for them. So hopefully this will help them out. Now back to the whole me providing a discount code thing and things being pricey. Tall women's clothing could be expensive, y'all, like hundreds of dollars expensive. Some of the prices that we're seeing do leave some tall women asking why we have to pay an arm in lag to get clothing that fit our long limbs. There was actually this popular TikTok trend from like a year or two ago, I believe, and the sound was show me the reason why you have no money? And this was like an overall trend. Like some people would show their pets or maybe their kids, some people would show their girlfriends. Some people will show like coffee or macha, or like they're talk about their or show their shopping addiction. But there are tall women who actually hopped on the bandwagon. And if you're watching the video version, I'm gonna show video examples of this. But for the audio listeners, they would basically mount the where it's show me the reason you have no money, and the text on the screen will basically say something like because of their long legs or because tall clothing. Finding tall women's clothing or buying tall women's clothing is very expensive. I actually did an episode on being tall overall is expensive, and clothing is definitely a big part in that. I've seen jackets and blazers for two three hundred dollars and pants and dresses between one hundred and two hundred dollars. I will definitely say that this is a lot more common for small tall brands or medium tall brands, if that even makes any sense. But the smaller brands, those higher prices are definitely more common, whereas bigger retailers like let's say Gap or Old Navy, those are definitely on the more affordable side. However, you're still spending like a good chunk of money. But I think that that's just the clothing. Especially with Gap, I think that's just the brand overall. That their prices tend to be like eighty ninety one hundred dollars, basically between sixty and one hundred dollars for like a pair of pants. But it's like for me personally, it's like, Okay, everybody, no matter their height, is paying that price. But the taller options have like three colors, but Petit and Regular have like seven, Like if we're gonna be paying the same price, can we at least get the same amount of colors? I don't know. American tall is a bit like in between. Some is like like let's say the tops is definitely more affordable, whereas some places tops are going for like fifty sixty dollars, but the jackets and the pants are a little bit on the priceier side. I will say even long tall Sally is more on the affordable side. And the fact of the matter here is that as tall women, we're just we're a smaller part of the population. Okay, So brands already face high risk and less profit potential when catering to us. So the premium price point does kind of justify the production, if that makes sense. While we're on the topic of production, you know, making tall clothing involves more fabric, more complex inventory management. The costs are going to be higher, So the higher pricing is not entirely the brand's fault. They still have to make some type of profit on top of having to pay more to create clothing. That's for us. You know what. Actually, there's a video regarding this from a small tall clothing brand owner, Jordan. She is the founder of Elevated Closet, and she gives her two cents in response to a comment that was under one of her TikTok videos. So I'm just going to play that here. It secks being tall. I'm six foot one. I can never find pants of any kind that are long enough without paying an arm and a leg. First off, I hear you. I totally understand it's I'm a consumer too. I'm six foot four, and I was frustrated as well. But I was frustrated with big box stores who have the ability to create clothes for us and they choose not to. And I understand, like it's just not a big market for them, and so they really concentrate on that middle of the market and they don't even want to deal with tall girls clothing. But that forces small brands like me to step up and create clothing for us that doesn't exist. But in doing so, being a small brand, I don't have the buying I don't have the buying power that they have, and I wish that they would use so that they could make those lower cost items for us, and they don't, and I don't have the ability to do that, and it's frustrating. I totally get it. I wish I was this huge brand that could offer those prices and I just can't. But I just wanted to let you and know. We were going back and forth in the comment section, but I just wanted to let you know that I'm doing the best I can to support us because I'm us as well. Right, I'm six foot four. I want these clothes as well because I can't find them. I have a thirty eight inch in seam. I I'm six foot four, you know, so like it's been a lifetime battle for me. And that's why I stepped up and was like, you know what, I'm going to solve this problem. I'm gonna create clothing. And in doing so, I've learned a lot about creating clothes and how much it costs and how much it costs to run this business. And it's really hard, and there's a reason why normal brands rarely make it. And I've been around I'm forty four years old. I've seen all of the Tall Girl stores shut down, the long Tall salies that have been run out of the country, And it's scary as a brand owner to try and support a niche that is it's hard to serve and it is so small. Additionally, there are also some tall women out there who feel like some tall clothing options are too basic or the quality is just that for it to be priced high. A tall garly on Reddit actually said that most Tall brands are over priced basics, and fifty euros for a plain tea that is five centimeters longer is low key as scam, and someone commented underneath this also said, I feel like the American tall pants I got were such a ripoff. They are paper thin, no pockets, just a basic pair of yoga pants for fifty dollars. And actually there are quite a few comments saying that American tall pants are of poor quality. So if you have any experience with American tall or American tall pants and are they good quality? Are they bad quality? Definitely let us know. We need all the reviews that we can at this point. So is the higher pricing, is it being more expensive on more expensive side justifiable to many folks? It seems like it isn't if it's basic slash, if it's poor quality, obviously, if it's poor quality and high pricing, anybody would just be like that's a scam. But two basic a place basic, As the person said in the Reddit, a plain white tea for fifty euros. That's five centimeters longer. I can see that. I can understand that, or even some of the blazers and stuff that I've seen in other tall sites. Three hundred and four hundred dollars. You know, that's a pretty high price, but if it's of good quality, I personally think it's partially justifiable. And then on top of that, it's like, we don't really have that many options right now. We have options, we have more options than before, but there's still a ways to go, especially with big retailers that offer more portable prices because they're obviously bigger retailers, so to some degree, because yes, there's more options, but still kind of limited options, especially with true tall clothing. You know, we should just do our best to save up and plan these purchases ahead of time if we feel like it's extremely expensive or out of our budget. There's also opportunities, especially with tall size, where you can buy secondhand tall clothing for a lower price, So definitely look into that as well, but shop sales shopping places where they offer tall secondhand clothing, even renting clothing. Discount codes like the one I've just provided earlier of course, saving up our money and planning for these purchases can definitely be very helpful, because it's best to get things over time, good quality pieces that fit our body well and fit our long limbs well, instead of just doing whatever and trying whatever. You know what I mean, And that's just my personal opinion. I will say that as a short, tall girly, it's a little bit easier for me compared to six three six four, six five and up women. Yeah, if you have any other tips or anything that you want to share in the comments or in the DMS and my DMS, feel free to let me know. We can have a conversation about this. However, I do think that stores like Macy's and Nords drum rack, those places that have like a bunch of different brands in one area in one store, that sells different brands in one place in one store, I think that they should also be incorporating these small tall brands or medium tall brands, or just brands in general, or be incorporating more tall sizes because it's not necessarily also about being tall, so also just about having long limbs. And there are people who are maybe average height but or a little bit above average height, but because of their proportions, they still require things that fit their longer limbs. So I think that stores like those should definitely start incorporating things like that. So yeah, I'm gonna end the episode here. Thank you so much for tuning in. I really appreciate it, and I appreciate you of course. As always, feel free to hit me up on my socials at a Tall Gross Podcast and let me know what you thought about this episode. Do you think tall clothing is expensive, what are your experiences with that, how do you go about that, Where do you shop for tall clothing? What other clothing options are out there that I didn't mention. Feel free to let us know in the comments, send me a DM And yeah, thank you for tuning into this episode. Again, I appreciate you all, and especially all the new subscribers that I've had, the new listeners that I've had recently, and until then, until you hit me up and so forth, I will catch you guys in the next one. Good night and goodbye.
