Good morning everybody. You are currently listening to a tall Girls podcast hosted by a tall girl named India. I hope everyone who's tuning in is doing super fantastic today. Before I get into this episode, I do want to say we have a special guest today. Her name is Emily. Hi Emily, Hello, India. You're right, I am, I'm I'm vibing right now. Okay, yeah, okay, how are you doing today? Should I say I'm vibing too? I'll say I'm vibing too. Yeah, we're all we're all vibing today. That I'm just you know what, That's honestly the best answer I've ever heard. We're all vibing today. Please please please take a second to introduce yourself to the audience. Yeah, no worries at all. Hello everybody. My name is Emily. Thank you so much India for talking to me today and having me on your show. It's a pleasure to speak to you and your audience. I'm twenty six years old. I'm UK based. You may be able to tell from my accent I'm from the UK. By the end of the podcast, I'll probably be speaking like you. I've got this chameleon thing where I adopt people's accents, so I'll probably be American by the end of this call. I'm UK based in Bedfordshire. To be exact, I am the founder of forty eight, which we'll be talking about later on, and I am five eleven, which is about one hundred and eighty centimeters. We love that. I You know, most of the people that actually end up on this podcast are like six feet are over, so you're you're actually the second person. Dang, you could have been the first person, but you're the second person I'm here that actually ended up saying that their high started with the five. So you know what this is. This is a message to everybody out there that just because your hat started the five doesn't mean that tall. You can exactly be tall. But speaking of being tall, I want to hear about your experience growing up as a tar girl, the good, the bad, ugly was what was that like for you? Okay, so I've been tall. I shot up really early, from an early age. I shot up and I carry most of my weight in my legs, so I got really long legs and a really small torso I usually describe myself as like a daddy long legs spider normally. And I've got kind of long arms as well, which yeah, I've learned to love them, but yeah, spaghetti arms as well. When I was little, I think the main contributor towards my confidence was my ballet. So I used to dance. I used to do ballet, and it kind of allowed me to control my limbs, get some control and things like that. School it was frustrating. I did have the comments, the usual comments, negative comments, and it does bring you down. But I was always quite proud of my height internally, Like I always thought to myself, I do love my height, but it's when people are always talking about it that it kind of starts niggling at you. Yeah. The one thing I always talk about is my school photos. When you've got the whole group class photos. I always used to know exactly where I was going. I never had any direction from the photographers. I was like, I'm at the back and I'm in the middle. I got my mom to get all my photos out last week, and every single one of them I was in the same place, top in the middle, at the back. Why is that so true? I remember it was specifically from fifty eighth grade too. I remember because I don't remember like the pictures before that, but always I'm always in the back in the middle too. Until one day we got a student, a boy who was actually the same height as me. However, because he always wore chunkier shoes than me, he looked taller. So he took my spot, and then I was right next to it, because you know, they have it like in hegh order and away like the talles in the middle. Then it's going down from there. So I was right next to him, and you know, I mean I felt kind of bad, like dang, he took my spot, like that's my signature spot. But then I also kind of felt good, like wow, like I'm finally in a different place. Just to spice it up a little bit. Yeah, my parents, my parents never had to look for me every time. Yeah. Yeah, So you were talking about how there were people who were bullying you a little bit. What was something involving your height? It could be like a question or a comment. What was something involving your height that you hated hearing? Okay, so I got the usual in terms of the word bullying, I think that's quite a strong word, verbal bullying. Yes, there was nothing else other than just comments here and there. I think I got the usual lanky giraffe blah blah blah. But the one name that stuck with me and it still sticks with me now is skyscraper. Oh walking skyscraper. Oh, that was the one comment that stuck with me. I laugh about it now, but at the time I was it was proper serious. I was like, mom, why are they calling me a skyscraper? I remember looking up on Google at the time. How do I reduce my height? Are there any surgeries to reduce my height? Yeah? I did. It did get pretty bad, but yeah, skyscraper. It's funny now. Oh no, not funny, but I've got to laugh at now. Yeah. Because I'm now I'm proud of my height, I can laugh at it. But at the time it probably did affect me. Yeah. And it's so strange because like, I've never heard of when I hear like the term skyscraper, I've never heard of it, like to one person, Like, especially when people message me over on social media, it's usually like two people where they're called skyscrapers or of twin towers. Oh my god, that's yeah, yeah, And I think I got that once. Twin towers myself because I used to play basketball when I was younger, and it was me and this other girl. It was so strange because we all we didn't look like alike alike, but we kind of looked similar, so people thought we were related. And then on top of that, we were around the same height, so people were also call us the twin Towers. Wow, you just like a memory from the past. But yeah, it's not good to get the weirdest people get the weirdest names. But yeah, you were talking. You said, when you introduce yourself, you mentioned your business, So tell us a little bit about it, like what is your mission? Like how does the benefit of others, how does it benefit tell people? Let us know what's the vibe with that, and what's the vibe? Okay? So Courtier is a company that I have founded this year and it was born out of frustrate really as a tall lady. I was going online and I was searching for my clothes. I did do high street shopping, but that was even more frustrating because the tour section was like hidden away or no tool section at all. I was going on the individual websites and having to type in ball long and find all the individual brands separately, so I thought I would bring all them collections together into one space, and then that's how Quartier was born. So our aim is to become the UK's fashion destination for tour women so they can find all independent, full specific brands on one platform altogether. And one of our other main missions is to just celebrate height and celebrate inclusivity and create a community around that as well. Honestly think that that's a good idea in terms of bringing tar brands together on one's especially when I was going through you say before here seeing all of them, especially the more popular ones, just on one say, I feel like it's a lot easier instead of having to go from what, like you said before, from one place another places. They were all over the place on the internet. So I just think that that's a really good idea. What has the process been like kind of like collaborating with other brands and like trying to get them on board onto your business. Yeah, absolutely, thank you so much for what you've just said as well. I'm glad that you're excited about it. I'm excited about it too. I think it's one of those brands I just wanted to have growing up and now I'm kind of just doing it myself because there's still nothing really in the UK like it. In terms of working with brands, I kind of when I was starting the business, I did a lot of research into the brands around and I made a list and I'd reached out to all of them individually. So I've been taking part in a lot of video calls because a lot of people are based outside the UK I'm talking to as well, so video calls is kind of the only way of communication at the moment. But yeah, meeting new people talking about their businesses, their journeys, and some of them are startups, they're small, and it's really nice to see a founder talking about their business and their journey in such detail and see how passionate they are about it. It's really really nice. I can definitely imagine Asry trying to collaborate and trying to get everybody out of there. Are you able to list a few that are already on board and maybe some that you're trying to get on board? Yeah? Yeah, absolutely so. In the elevated closet, I have had a really nice conversation with Jordan. She had a massive conversation with me but her business, as you know, is growing and growing brain and she's a really busy lady, so to take wat on is quite a big step for her. So we're just working through the little finer details with her company at the moment. Another brand we've got on board is megan Ismay. She is based in the UK. She makes the clothes in house in Nottingham and she's really focused on using sustainable and recycled materials as well, so I'm really glad to have her on board. The other one I've got on board is Tenny, the label who is like a tall lounge were brand, which I'm really excited about. You listen a lot of brands. You talked a lot about your experience with getting these tile brands on board. What are some of the challenges that you've feaced in creating a brand specifically for a tall individual tall women, and how have you overcome them? Okay, challenges, So I think first off was on the business side was making a website. I have never made a website in my life, and I've had to kind of learn from the bottom, watching thousands of videos, reading thousands of tutorials about how to make a website flow nicely for the customer. The other challenge would probably making the UK fork. I think the US has got a really good community of tour women. I think the US do it by miles the best. They talk about it, they reach out, they have a very nice community where you can talk to people about the brands you wear. It's definitely something that the UK market should aspire to be like. So I think it's just trying to get the UK toll girls out of the woodwork. Like I'm tall, we exist, we are here, I've got friends that at all, but we're just not kind of speaking about it, and nothing's going to change if we don't speak about it. So I feel like I need like a big billboard Hortier is here, Tall women, where are you? It's so great that you mentioned that, because if you think about it, you're really starting that color sation just by having that business. Yeah. Yeah, I think it's just one of those things we don't talk about it enough and then things aren't going to change. You've got to start talking about it, like with anything really. And I know tall people and they always complain about their clothes, so we and the thing is we're talking about it is that people will be inspired and other fashion brands we inspired to concentrate heavily on their diversity of their clothing. We've got a really good petite range in the UK, We've got a really nice curve plus sized range, but I feel like the tool has been left behind slightly, which is sad. Yeah, So I honestly it's super important that you're able to start their carro sheets and it's super important that you're trying to get that message out there. And I absolutely love what you're doing. And you spoke, you just like spoke a little bit about like the representation, but can you just do like, can you speak a little bit more about the importance of rubberies and tea like in the fashion industry, especially for like under represented groups like as tall women. Yeah. Absolutely, it is so important and I find it's so interesting. The market is moving forward, I'll give it that. So it is definitely going in the right direction, quite slowly, but it's getting there. The fashion industry caters for five foot six height, so US five eleven six foot queens are suffering slightly. And the thing is when it comes off of the catwalk, you see peoplem London Fashion Week, Paris Fashion week fashion weeks all over the world. You see it on tall women. For them to take it off the catwalk and it to go straight down to five foot six doesn't make sense to me. Obviously five foot six needs to be catered for, but so does everybody else. So just to have that kind of diverse sizing ranges, it's not too much. And you're talking about slowing fashion down, that's a big topic at the moment. Everything's fast fashion and returns rates are high. I don't know whether it's an issue in the US, but it's definitely an issue here in the UK. Returns rates, parcels going back and forth. How it's affecting the environment. It's not good and I think the number one reason I return a parcel is because it doesn't fit right exactly. So if we've got a website that can bring people's confidence up that they've got all the size guides there, they know that these items are going to fit and it just comes down to how it looks. I think hopefully fingers crossed, the returns rate will four, So I'm trying to slow fashion down a little bit too. That is so a great and I want to end on this awesome episode with this one question. What is one piece of advice that you want to give to the todd girls listening right now who are struggling with their self esteem because of their height. Okay, so this is such a good question, and I really like this one. Whenever I mention my height, my partner always follows with pool and beautiful. That's how he refers to it. Tall and beautiful every single time. If I ever complain about my height, oh I look so tall. Tall and beautiful is how he responds. Every time. You're like, oh yeah, I kind of act cool when he says it, but I do remember it, and it is very sweet in terms of women out there who are doubting things. If someone is making a negative comment about you and it's your height, they can't find anything else to talk about. They haven't picked your personality. If it was your personality, that's detrimental, that is really attacking somebody. But your height that's the only thing they've got on you. So it says more about them than it says about you. I think you know that's mathematics right there. Literally, yeah, this is like absolutely, you're gonna you're gonna say something bad about something that someone has absolutely no control over Yeah, absolutely, like you quite literally cannot find anything else. I mean, you can't find anything else to say. And it's just if that is the only thing that they can find about you. Be proud of it. Be yourself, love yourself, and it's nothing. You're not a horrible person. It's your height. Embrace it. It's it's crazy that people take the piss out of people's heights. Can I say piss? Yeah it is okay, that is absolutely fine. But yeah, I agree because my mom my sister, they always say that that's the first sign of jealousy. So if they're jealous, yeah, they're jealous, you know, especially about something like that. You know that's a good sign. That's a good sign for you. But think you. Thank you so much Emily for being on this podcast. This is I absolutely love this. This is great, This is entertaining.
